Northeast Ithaca Mom Announces Run For Tompkins County Legislature

ITHACA, NEW YORK, April 3, 2017 — Shawna Black, longtime Ithaca resident, citizen activist, Southern Tier AIDS Program employee, and mom of three announces her candidacy for the Democratic Party nomination for Tompkins County Legislator for the 11th District, which encompasses parts of Northeast, Forest Home, South Hill and Eastern Heights. Shawna will compete in the Democratic party primary on September 12, 2017.

“At this critical moment for our community, we need to focus on priorities that will move us forward together. That’s why I believe that we need to find workable solutions to address housing needs for seniors and middle class families, support stable and accessible public transportation options through TCAT, and expand quality childcare opportunities for families across Tompkins County. I am dedicated to raising my voice to advocate for smart solutions to these issues that reflect the concerns of real people living, working, and raising families in Tompkins County.”

“As a long-time resident of Ithaca and a member of the Northeast Ithaca neighborhood, I am privileged to have experienced the beautiful surroundings and strong sense of community that Tompkins County offers. It is time for us to do more to ensure that the County remains a place where our seniors, our neighbors and our children can thrive. Growing a sustainable economy that provides tangible opportunities requires that we deal with basic needs such as affordable middle-class and senior housing, viable public transportation, and quality childcare options.”

“I’ve been listening to the concerns that I hear expressed in Northeast Ithaca and across the County and I believe that it is my duty as a member of this community to be a part of the solution. Now is the time for us to work together, and my campaign is driven by the simple notion that ordinary people can make a difference. I hope to be a voice for real change, that makes a real difference, for real people.”
